Northumberland Arts & Crafts

Paintings by the Ashington Group depict life as it was for the residents of this once thriving mining town

Northumberland inspires a huge number of talented artists and craftspeople. Our countryside and towns and villages are home to fantastic art galleries, craft shops and studios. Take in the Art Tour of our artists’ open studios and workshops, which happens during June and July. Many though are open at other times of the year, or by prior arrangement. Visit one of our many craft centres where shopping for traditional and contemporary Northumberland arts and crafts can be found.

Alternatively, if you want to hone your own artistic skills, visit the Network Artists website to discover the fascinating array of workshops on offer.

The art and craft of Northumberland is as much a part of our rich cultural tradition as the music, food and farming and landscape. The painter L.S. Lowry was attracted time and again to the walled border town of Berwick upon Tweed. His work captures the atmosphere of the town perfectly, and can be enjoyed today on a trail through streets, quays and squares.

There is also a great history of the people of Northumberland recording their lives through paint and line. The collection of paintings made by the Pitman Painters held in the Woodhorn Museum is a wonderfully evocative and primitive illustration of Northumberland’s mining communities. Also in this collection is the Trade Union Banners of a proud industrial past.

The beauty of Berwick-upon-Tweed has inspired many artists over the years, the most notable being L S Lowry who has a trail dedicated to him through the town.
